This approval marks a move toward cultural accountability for the fire adapted landscape that we are privileged to inhabit, and the promise to an end to the war on fire. We currently live surrounded by forests that are so overstocked with fuels that there is a constant threat of them exploding in catastrophic fire on any given windy day. Alpenglow timber is a blueprint for changing our relationship with the landscape from a reactive, defensive stance to a pro-active, reciprocal engagement.
The mill will use small diameter logs from thinning operations as feedstock for engineered lumber. The waste will be used as fuel for onsite boilers. It is optimized to the size of it's original design to be sustainable according to feedstock produced within a radius that remains economically feasible to access, and will facilitate thinning operations by a variety of nearby stakeholders whose projects have been stalled by the absence of a place to take the thinned material.
There is a low income housing component that further broadens its positive local import. The presence of this operation will nurture a local economy and workforce tied to the surrounding landscape, and provide a blueprint that can be modified to serve unique communities throughout California and the fire adapted landscapes of the world.
